When any bearing fails it'll make a horrendous noise. Before pulling the water pump, take off all the accessory belts and spin the pulley on each accessory. Listen for noise and feel for any grinding/resistance. Definitely have a new water-pump (as well as gaskets and thermostat, obviously) on-hand ...
